The Journey of a Documentary Film

In 2002, I was living in Riga, Latvia. I had moved there on the heels of graduate school to work on my first documentary feature, titled “Between Latvias” (Starp Latvijām). Home alone on a Friday night, I got a message from a friend- “Izsaku līdzjūtību” (I express my sympathy). What? I thought perhaps something had happened to my grandmother. But instead, it was my father. My family hadn’t quite figured out how to tell me, across the ocean, that he had died unexpectedly.
